Asset Building Classrooms (ABC)

STEPS builds a better tomorrow for Southington by empowering youth with resilience, tolerance, acceptance, and much more

Our work to help youth live their best lives spans our entire community. STEPS invests in a pioneering, in-depth program called Asset Building Classrooms (ABC). It is a partnership between STEPS and Southington Public Schools.

The focus of ABC is to develop healthy and successful youth who live with intention and purpose. The program follows the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Asset Model.

STEPS Asset Building Classrooms

Developmental assets are positive building blocks that all students need. Think of these assets as skills and traits, or a combination of both. Students can use these assets as a foundation to live healthy and successful lives. They can boost student self-esteem, teach leadership skills, provide motivation, instill a sense of purpose, and create many more success-oriented beliefs and behaviors.

During the school year, Southington Public Schools highlights an ‘Asset of the Month’ in each school throughout the district. And every school even has its own dedicated ABC Team! We encourage any student who is interested — from 5th grade on up — to sign up and be part of their school’s ABC team. No student is turned away.

Our Focus on Youth

STEPS was founded in 2007 with a mission to help our youth grow up to be caring, competent and successful. We develop programs and opportunities for young people to step up and showcase their best selves.

STEPS partners with Southington Public Schools to follow an Asset Building Classrooms (ABC) model. We also have a STEPS Youth Council and a classroom-based curriculum to improve student health and safety.
