May Asset Building Challenge of the Month!

Southington's Town-wide Effort to Promote Success is all about helping youth thrive. One major way to do this is to make sure youth feel valued, not just by teachers and parents, but the entire community in which they live.

Here are a few other great tips for this month’s Asset Building Challenge from the Search Insitute:

1) When young workers at a grocery store or restaurant wait on you, greet them in a friendly manner, compliment them, or ask them about how school is going.

Here are a few other great tips for this month’s Asset Building Challenge from the Search Insitute:

2) Be patient with youth. Anyone can make a mistake, not just because of their age.

3) Encourage questions and opinions from youth. Once that is done, follow through to make changes.

 

Included are a few tips from Southington residents on how to build this asset:

–          Make sure every child feels their voice matters

–          React to the needs of our youth and let them know that together, anything can be accomplished

–          Give kids a voice in the community so they will feel respected and useful and provide them ways to contribute in   useful ways

–          Increase youth attendance at community events

–          Listen to kids when they talk

–          Offer a trusting, caring, and non-judgmental environment

–          Host career fairs and job shadows & be a host of an internship for a high school student

–          Become mentors at middle schools

–          Volunteer at youth events

–          Create one-on-one relationships with frequent youth customers

–          Using the internet to access youth to promote positive values and healthy, safe weekend activities

–          Have a student liaison on all town boards, including the Town Council

–          Hold youth forums with reps from all schools on topics of importance to kids – run by kids with adult guidance

–          Make sure youth are engaged in planning of our town, especially Strategic Planning

–          Have a career day where high school students talk to elementary school kids about what THEY want to do for a career

–          Place a sign up that says “I support/appreciate our Southington youth.”

–          Discount nights for youth at local businesses

–          Student sections of local newspapers – “Student’s Corner”
