Conversation Cards Are Causing Great Family Communication!

A few short months ago, a student came to a STEPS Youth Council meeting with an idea. She had seen a family at a local restaurant sitting in silence. The kids were texting and a little one was using an iPad to play a game. The kids were quiet and well behaved but there was something wrong with this picture to her. She wanted to find a way for families to have more fun together. Family dinner is a tradition in her own family, and she always looks forward to sitting down with her parents and siblings to talk about their days. Youth Council took the thought and ran with it.

Today, Southington STEPS is proud to announce that 16 restaurants in town have placed "Conversation Cards" on each of their tables for families to use while waiting to order or when eating their meals. The idea is simple: Talk more. About anything! The questions are designed to promote the asset "Positive Family Communication" and STEPS hopes you take the opportunity to put down the technology and get talking to your loved ones!

One parent found the cards at her family's table last Saturday and began to ask her children questions. She wrote to us and said, "On the table in the back part of the restaurant was a deck of cards that had the STEPS Logo on them. After we finished eating, I opened up the box and started to read the questions to my children, ages 7, 10 and 11. My husband and I had a great time listening to the many wonderful responses that we were getting from them. Questions ranged from "What is one thing would you change about your parent's rules?" and "Name an aspect that you like about yourself." There were many more too. We finally realized that we were there for about 2 hours. We all loved them so much! We have family game night and this would be a great addition to our game pile. I would even bring it to my next family dinner and "play" it with my siblings. I also think that it would make great gifts for other family and friends. You definitely hit it out of the park with the cards! Great way to interact with your kids without them really realizing. GREAT JOB!"

Another Southington citizen wrote: "I just received an email about this and I think it is an AMAZING idea!  Nowadays with all the different electronics it is so easy to "entertain" children (and adults lets be honest) by just handing over the IPod or IPad/Tablet.  Now don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the educational games/apps that children can use (within reason), however quality time with family seems to be a rare occurrence more than ever. I think that small amount of quality time should be spent engaging with children.  It is funny how something as simple as "talking" with a child becomes one of the hardest things to do.  With the conversation starter cards the conversation moves from "how was your day" and "what did you learn" to questions that are thought provoking and creative!  I commend STEPS for creating this initiative!  Keep up the great work!"

STEPS would like to thank the following restaurants so much for participating in the "Conversation Card" initiative:

Friendly's, Moe's, Pop's Burgers, Family Pizza, Smokin' with Chris, Wood n Tap, Outback, TD Homers, Steve's Restaurant, El Sombrero, Pepper Pot, Fireplace, the Carousel, Spartan Pizza II, the Manor Inn and Renaldo's!

STOP BY THESE RESTAURANTS TO TRY OUT THE CARDS TODAY.

GET TALKING.

GET LAUGHING.

GET COMMUNICATING!
