An Asset a Day at YMCA Camp Sloper

Asset Building at YMCA窶冱 Camp Sloper

In a partnership with STEPS, YMCA Camp Sloper recently adopted the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Asset Model into both the East and West Coasts of camp. ツAn 窶廣sset of the Day窶 is announced every morning and is incorporated throughout the day, just like our Asset Building Classrooms initiative within the Southington Public School System. ツThis morning, I was able to visit camp to see asset building in action and the asset was: 窶徘ositive view of personal future.窶

In the morning, campers learned the meaning of the Asset of the Day and were told that 窶they can be great in anything they do and their futures are bright.窶 Counselors then included the Asset of the Day in their activities. ツToday, the youngest campers on the East Coast went through 窶廱edi Training窶 (because this session at camp is Star Wars) and were encouraged to be their best selves. The training involved both mental and physical challenges. Counselors challenged the campers to determine what makes a person good and gave examples of how they can be good, too. They also participated in games that encouraged healthy lifestyles, for a healthy future.

Other campers worked on memory books that highlighted the positive memories they have had at camp so far and their future goals for the summer. ツThe older campers on the East Coast were able to plan their own units at the time of my visit in which they had the ability to create their own schedules, giving them the responsibility and decision-making skills needed on a day-to-day basis.

At the end of the camp day, asset building is also incorporated into the acknowledgement of the 窶廚amper of the Day, 窶 in which a camper that exhibits a positive attitude and a caring nature toward his or her peers is identified. This recognition highlights camp窶冱 character values.

I had a great visit and was glad to see Asset Building out at camp. Thanks to Shane and his staff for providing kids in our town with an awesome place to spend their summer!
