2016 Prom Promise Campaign

Both the Southingtonツjunior and senior proms are just around the corner and the annual STEPS prom campaign is underway. ツIn an effort toツdiscourage underage drinking on prom night,ツthe campaign asksツstudents attending the prom and their parents or guardians to sign the 窶弃rom Promise.窶 By signing the promise students agree they will not drink, and parents/guardians agree that they will not host parties where there is underage drinking. While these are two different promises, both are equally important in promoting a safe night for all in the town of Southington.

Details on the Parent Promise: In the beginning of March, letters were sent home to parents discussing the importance of promoting prom night safety and the Connecticut Social Host Law.ツ The Connecticut SocialツHost Law makes it illegal for parents to host parties where anyone under the age of 21 is allowed to drink in their home or on their property.ツ Attached to the letter was a pledge card that these parents were asked to sign and return toツSTEPS promising not to supply or allow their children to drink on prom night.ツ Once they signed their pledge cards, parents had the option of either receiving a lawn sign that displays their commitment to the promise or to be acknowledged in a local newspaper the week of prom. ツMake sure you keep a lookout for lawn signs around town!

Details on the Student Promise:ツツAt school during the week leading up to the prom, students are asked to sign the prom promise, pledging not to drink alcohol on prom night.ツ Once they make the promise, their names are entered into a raffle for their choice of prizes that were generously donated byツlocal businesses.ツ Prizes available are free prom tickets, a photography package, hairstyle gift cards or a corsage/boutonniere gift certificate. The seniors at Southington High School will be asked to take the prom promise the week prior to their prom in May.

In addition to the student and parent/guardian pledges, twoツAMP Radioツmessages (advertising at the gas pumps) have also been made to target both the parents and the students.

Thank you to everyone that makes the PROMISE andツto Art Rich Photography, Eclipse Hair Salon, Silk Nails, Bangle, Modern Formals, the Southington Community YMCA, Jillian and Company and Rose to the Occasion for their generous donations.
